Reading Glasses, Monovision, and Multifocal Contact Lenses
|
When it comes to correcting reading vision with contact lenses, there are generally three options available. Pretty much anybody, whether they previously required vision correction or not, will be faced with challenges focusing up close by the time they are at the young age of 44. The condition is referred to as presbyopia and is caused by a hardening of the interior crystalline lens of the eye. This is natural and we all have to accept it. The question is, what are your options with contact lenses?
The most basic way to correct your near vision is with a pair of reading glasses over your lenses. Essentially, maintain the optimal distance correction in your contacts and when improved reading is necessary, slide on your eyeglasses. Reading glasses today are made to be fun and stylish. Many designers, such as EyeBobs and Amy Sacks have made entire lines of stylish frames. Let’s face it, if you are going to wear them, you may as well pick out a style you will be happy with.
An alternative method to correct reading vision with contact lenses is a technique called monovision. With monovision, your eye care provider will determine your dominant eye and leave that eye corrected for optimal distance vision. Your non-dominant eye will be slightly undercorrected in the distance, which will allow it to focus up close. With two eyes open, a monovision wearer will have good distance, middle, and near vision. Almost any lens can be used for this system, including toric lenses for astigmatism.
The third method is to use multifocal contact lenses. Multifocal lenses have a varying power range built in, allowing eyes to see clearly at a variety of distances. One lens will have a distance correction, as well as a reading add ranging anywhere from +100 to +3.00, depending on the style of contact. Multifocal lenses are available for just about any correction, but they do require a skilled contact lens fitter to determine the best fit. This is especially true if astigmatism is present or for those that require higher reading adds.
In some instances a combination of all three methods may be used to give the best overall vision, comfort, and health. Presbyopia is natural and we all have to deal with it eventually. Between today’s contact lenses, reading glasses and skilled contact lens fitters there is no reason you can not continue to see clearly and comfortably. |
